Leo Sayer : Living in a Fantasy
Living in a Fantasy
rpmsb1008

This is the eighth album in the Leo re-issue series and a return to English shores. Recorded at the Roundhouse and RG Jones, produced by Alan Tarney, and released in a sleeve designed by Hipgnosis ( famed for their Pink Floyd and Yes covers ).

This album also shows a return to the more introspective approach to recording, with Leo and Alan Tarney providing most of the accompaniment. A poppier approach than the previous album, there was only one cover song on the album, but what a song to go with, More Than I Can Say. The Sonny Curtis classic became a major hit for Leo in 1980, no.2 in the US, no.2 in the UK, no. 8 in Germany. In turn this helped propel the LP into the album charts in all three major music territories.

Moving on to the seventh album of Leo's career we are now in 1979 and recording with David Courtney again. Courtney, the one time partner of Adam Faith, who had written and recorded the first two albums with Leo.

Following writing Sunset On Sunset together for Tina Turner David and Leo, both based in the US still, assembled an amazing team of players to perform their songs for this next album. It is a testament to Leo's standing in the US at the time that these people wanted to get involved.

The famous Stax guitar & bass pairing of Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, Steve Lukather from TOTO, Chuck Rainey - bass player with Aretha Franklin, steel guitar whizz David Lindley, Freddie Tackett from Bob Dylans band, drummer Rick Shlosser from Bozz Scaggs band, Al Kooper- who gave a previously unrecorded song to the album, Ray Parker jr, keyboardist from Little Feat Bill Payne, pianist Billy Livsey now writer for Ronan Keating. All Recorded by Humberto Gatica, later producer of Celine Dion and many a film score.

It all added up to an amazing recording, inventive, professional, quality oozing from every vinyl groove. A highlight being When The Money Runs Out, a Memphis vs Detroit soul battle between Ray Parker jr and Steve Cropper on guitars. It comes across very much as Leo's first band album, rather than the solo singer / songwriter plus session guests. This album is also very soulful in the classic way, great rhythm and blues backings and Leo's gospelly vocals. Sales wise at the time it suffered from the prior release of a Greatest Hits which is a pity because it Here remains Leo's most accomplished piece.

The full story of making this incredible album is retold by Leo and David Courtney on the exclusive interview bonus track. This is the only band album of the catalogue - with the best band in the world ever! Plus the most soulful of Leo's catalogue, still with a charge today!

Volume 5 in the Leo Sayer One Man Band Story publishes a brand new essay on Leo by Rolling Stone journalist and music editor Ben Fong-Torres.

The story has now reached the time when Leo is living in America, and performing effectively as a US artist. Work with producer Richard Perry continues to yield the hits and Leo is now co-writing with Albert Hammond and Tom Snow. This album from 1977 includes contributions from noted musicians such as Lee Ritenour, Ray Parker, Jeff Porcaro and Larry Carlton and includes the hit "Thunder In MY Hear" and also the bonus track "Tell Me Just One More Time" which later became a hit for Jennifer Warnes.

A reprint of a major Rolling Stone feature on Leo from 1977, in the packaging for Endless Flight, sets the scene. Interviews by Leo with Richard Perry, recorded this year, reflect on the making of each album.

Endless Flight was the biggest album of Leo's career going top 10 in the US and top 5 in the UK, spending over year on the charts. It firmly established Leo as an international star and hit artist with hits such as "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", "When I Need You", "How Much Love"

Rolling Stone journalist and music editor Ben Fong-Torres supplies the industry take on Leo for this fourth volume, presenting the international chart topping album from 1976. Added as a bonus are samples of the debut recording session Leo made in the US with Richard Perry; one a motown classic, the other a stunning version of a Swan Silvertones song.

Leo Sayer : Another Year
Another Year

Following his first US tour during which Leo is signed by Warner Brothers for that territory, the third album is released in 1975. Written by Leo with co writer Frank Farrell from Supertramp, and produced by Adam Faith with Russ Ballard (of Roulettes and Argent fame). It is the last album recorded wholly in the UK. The extra track Let It Be, a version of the Beatles classic, was one of Adam Faiths favourite songs so Leo recorded it as a one off Christmas single. Moonlighting is the chart single released from the album, reaching no.2 (only kept off no.1 by Rod Stewarts 'Sailing') with the album reaching the Uk Top 10 in 1975.

Original album plus bonus music tracks and specially recorded audio track with Leo interview. Package includes essay by Chris Welch and photos plus memorabilia from Leo's own archive.

Leo Sayer : Just A Boy
Just A Boy
rpmsb1002

The follow up album released to capitalise on Leo's success in 1974. It was preceded by the release of two singles One Man Band (Uk no.6) and Long Tall Glasses (Uk no 4.). The former hit was very much how Leo saw himself at the time as a singer/songwriter, a wandering troubador carrying his songs around with him singing for his supper.

Just A Boy was the hook line from the song Giving It All Away which had been written for Roger Daltrey, and which Leo now recorded his own version for this album. Again the album has a similar feel to his debut album, very personal lyrical songs, sung with impassioned vocals and often accompanied by quite sparse yet very melodic piano/guitar backing.

One of the extra tracks Praise The Land was recorded during the album sessions and was used in the TV series Budgie which starred Leo's then manager Adam Faith. The other extra is Leo's version of a song that ended up on the Daltrey album. The album made no. 4 in the Uk chart and no. 16 in the US chart with Long Tall Glasses also becoming his first US hit reaching no. 9. One of the extra tracks Praise The Land was recorded in a session on its own and was used in the TV series Budgie which starred Leo's then manager Adam Faith. The other extra is Leo's version of a song that ended up on the Daltrey album.

Leo Sayer : Silverbird
Silverbird
rpmsb1001

Leo was discovered by Adam Faith in 1972 performing in the rock band Patches who released one single. David Courtney was the bands agent / manager, also the drummer in Faith's last band, and linked up with Faith in 1972 to help co-write and produce Leo's first solo recordings. These were made at Roger Daltrey's studio and instead the songs made up Daltrey's debut solo album Daltrey. From it came the hit single Giving It All Away, written by Sayer and Courtney.

Faith signed Leo to Chrysalis and from the next sessions came the album Silver bird, named after Leo's fascination with flying machines. Leo's sound and writing with Courtney has a similar feel to the early albums of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Released in 1973 the album spawned the single The Show Must Go On for which Leo memorably donned his Pier rot costume and made an extraordinary appearance on Top Of The Pops with the white face and gloves. It was a costume he wore on tour with Roy Music. The single reached no.2 and the album also no. 2 in the Auk charts in 1974. The Show Must Go On was covered by the US band Three Dog Night who scored a top 5 US hit later in the same year.
