One of the classic groups of the late 1940's/early 1950's, the Dominoes were led by Juillard-trained vocal coach Billy Ward, and are the bridge between the earlier Gospel and Ink Spots type of group and the coming world of Doo-Wop, R&B, and Rock'n'Roll

Their original lead singer Clyde McPhatter was coached by Ward to let his Gospel experience explode in a pop context, producing a fresh and startling sound which not only topped the R&B charts, but made them among the first black groups to gain a substantial following among young white kids, laying the ground for Alan Freed's promotion of black music as Rock'n'Roll

Their best known hit "60 Minute Man" was not only a vocal tour de force, but the first of the double entendre records which characterised early Rock'n'Roll

Financial disagreements broke up the original group at the beginning of 1953..Clyde teamed up with Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records and formed his own group: The Drifters, whose genius needs no bigging up here!...however Ward, talent spotter supreme, soon found a new lead singer: Jackie Wilson....the run of hits continued into the later 1950's, when Jackie also left for a meteoric pop/soul career....here though, are the hits of the original Dominoes with Clyde McPhatter.....and there are none better!

This album contains all the hits of the original lineup plus the Rock'n'Roll classic "60 Minute Man" all mastered from the original master tapes with detailed liner notes by Kingsley Abbott.
