| July | | Cherry Red Records | Hawkwind
Live 1984 – 1995 |
| CRDVDBOX1 |
| Released 06/07/2009.A welcome re-promotion for this Hawkwind DVD box-set popular on first release but unavailable for some time. The first ever DVD box-set release to feature one of the giants of rock music Hawkwind. Three discs with spectacular live performance as follows:CHRONICLE OF THE BLACK SWORD The success of Hawkwind during the seventies allowed them the privilege of meeting many of the artists and writers who had influenced them. Most prominent of these was Sci-Fi writer Michael Moorcock, whose sword and sorcery 'Elric' series had been the primary source for the bands' Chronicle of the Black Sword' album. Filmed in December 1985 at the Hammersmith Odeon, `Chronicle' does more than justice to what was a truly epic performance from the undisputed `kings of acid-rock overkill'. The narration is provided by Michael Moorcock. Packed with suitably obscure psychedelic mages and bizarre OTT stage antics, also included is the four number encore where Moorcock performs on stage with the band. NIGHT OF THE HAWKS Recorded live at the Gaumont Theatre, Ipswich in spring 1984 this superb film of the 'Hawks' features their most eccentric of front men Nik Turner in fine form. Resembling a creation from one of Dr.Who's least convincing episodes, Turner wanders around the stage like a maniac, motor -mouthing his way through what is a truly impressive set of some of Hawkwind's best material. The additional laser graphics and wild editing could not have been more suitable. Prepare yourself for an audio/visual Brainstorm. LOVE IN SPACE Love in Space was shot during Hawkwind's Alien 4 tour in 1995 and is comprised of the highlights taken from four venues - Liverpool Royal Court, Manchester Academy, Bristol Colston Hall and Brixton Academy London. It shows the band at their most creative and over the top, with then front man Ron Tree, wearing a vast array of bizarre costumes designed specially for the tour, alongside various performance artists. The band are paired down to a four piece but have lost none of the raw power one associates with archetypal Hawkwind, as they rip through numbers both old and new, including some true classics. With the advantage of digitally re-mastered sound you not only get to see Hawkwind at their most outrageous you also get to hear them exactly as they should be heard - loud and proud. Beatle Hits Flamenco Guitar Style |
| ACMEM84CD |
| Released 06/07/2009.Originally released in 1964, Beatle Hits-Flamenco Guitar Style is a collection of early Lennon & McCartney hits, imaginatively arranged and beautifully played by former Buddy Holly guitarist, Sonny Curtis. This is a long overdue repress and this album will obviously be of particular interest to Beatles complete-ists who are globally immense in number. It is arguably the most refined of all original Beatle exploitation albums and certainly one of the most unusual.Sonny Curtis is a virtuoso guitarist and a songwriter of outstanding pedigree. His repertoire including the famous rock n roll + punk anthem I Fought the Law which obviously gave hits to The Bobby Fuller Four and The Clash, amongst many others. On Kismet The Mastersounds are augmented by Wes Montgomery, for many, the ultimate jazz guitarist. These recordings are amongst his rarest and will be indispensable to both student of the genre and completists. | Repressed | Rah Band
The Crunch & Beyond |
| REPEAT1 |
| Released 06/07/2009.Re-Pressed was a new label launched by Phil King, musician with Felt, Lush and The Jesus & Mary Chain and Junkshop Glam compiler. The label’s belief is that the sounds of the past inform the future and this is a keenly sought after re-press for this debut Re-Pressed CD (try saying that really quickly!!). The Crunch & Beyond by the RAH Band was the brainchild of arranger Richard Hewson. His career dates back to arranging the Long and Winding Road for the Beatles; Melody (SWALK) O/S/T for the Bee Gees followed by arrangements for almost every top UK artist of the early 1970's. The Crunch + Beyond features the influential analogue synth classic track The Crunch, a top 10 UK hit in 1977, which has heavily influenced such contemporary artists as Goldfrapp (check out recent hit single Strict Machine/We are Glitter) and producer Richard X (Girls Aloud, Rachel Stevens). Close your eyes and you could be back in hmmmm January 2006. The album features such other retro futurist instrumentals as Concrete, Electric Flag , Turkey Roll and Is Anybody There? As a bonus we present the non LP single Jiggery Pokery / Porridge. Richard and his motley crew of synth glam space cadets beamed down to Top Of The Pops in the summer of 1977 with an unforgettable jaw dropping rendition of The Crunch , that was as shocking as the Sex Pistols first appearance on Granada TV's So It Goes. Hewson wearing a bin liner with accessorised PVC balaclava prodded out his primitive analogue synth sounds, his finger protruding from Steptoe fingerless gloves, whilst his band wearing thigh length boots and Kimonos lurched behind him! The Crunch / Electric Fling / Concrete / Is Anybody There? / Beyond/ Spacerace / Turkey Roll / Vampire Vamp / Woogie Boogie Bonus Tracks Jiggery Pokery / Porridge | |

Five Blind Boys of Mississippi
Something To Shout About… |
| SHOUT34 |
| Released 06/07/2009.The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi hold a high ranking in the realms of gospel groups from the Golden Age, having featured the distinctive hard tenor lead vocal of Archie Brownlee since the start of their recording career (as the Jackson Harmoneers) in 1945. They sang up a storm around the southern sates of the USA through the 1950s, having signed with Peacock Records in 1950, and their eight singles for the label yielded an R&B chart hit with Our Father in 1950. Two of the Blind Boys LPs for Peacock, Precious Memories and Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee are combined for this re-issue, having been collectors items for many years. The dynamic call-and-response vocals, laced with Brownlee s searing screams which would influence countless soul singers, served to inspire their audiences through the decade. Following the death of Brownlee in 1960, Henry Johnson carried on the torrid tradition, as can be witnessed in the opening eleven tracks of this anthology, with the great Archie Brownlee featuring on the other selections. How To Speak Hip + DIY Psychoanalysis Kit |
| CRAIC002 |
| Released 13/07/2009. The legendary Del Close, influential improvisational theatre figurehead, comic mentor, teacher and sometime actor, is known primarily for the long list of household names who found themselves under his tutelage at some time or other (Ackroyd, the Belushi brothers, Candy etc) and a handful of bit part roles in some great movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Untouchables among them. But before all this, as his comedic ideas and talent were blossoming, Close cut these two fantastic spoken word albums, one for Mercury (Hip, recorded with John Brent in 1958) and the other for the little known Hanover label. Very much both of their time and timeless, these brilliant discs both satirized and cashed in on the How To. And Teach Yourself album craze that hit America in the late 1950s, combining some great knowing humour with a couple of fantastic characters and concepts.Over the years, these albums, and particularly How To Speak Hip, have earned cult status and become increasingly difficult to come by, but we re now proud to present this two-fer with both albums re-mastered, collected onto one disc and packaged with a to-scale recreation of the amazing booklet originally included with HTSH. Of course it goes without saying that, here at Wisecrack, we’d never condone the use of illegal or contraband consciousness expanding materials, but if you do happen to find yourself in the grip of something you d rather not tell your mother about, these albums might just provide the perfect aural accompaniment. Two-fer ! Both albums remastered and squeezed onto one disc. Both titles long since out of print and unavailable on CD anywhere in the known universe. Every Time You Move |
| CRTREE1 |
| Released 20/07/2009. One of the rarest British underground folk releases of the early 1970s, the Hunter Muskett debut album Every Time You Move is also widely regarded as one of the best: a fragile, autumnal, quintessentially English beauty full of melancholy harmonies, layers of acoustic guitars, complementary bass (uncredited, but from Pentangle’s Danny Thompson) sympathetic baroque arrangements and, most of all, some lovely, highly poetic songs. The album has been bootlegged in the past, but this first-ever authorised reissue features master-tapes sound, restored artwork and a 16-page booklet that includes song lyrics, new quotes from founder member and chief songwriter Terry Hiscock, numerous previously unpublished photos (including a batch taken in the studio during the album s recording) and, for the first time, full details of the Hunter Muskett story.Every Time You Move / Hey Little Girl / Midsummer Night’s Dream / Press Gang / Storm On The Shore / Castle / I Have A House / Inside Mine / The Wait / Cardboard Man / Davy Lowston / Snow | |

Feelin’ Free |
| CRSEG005 |
| Released 20/07/2009. Although Feelin Free was released to widespread indifference back in January 1970, the sole album by Manchester band Pacific Drift remains a sparkling, West Coast-influenced amalgam of post-psychedelic pop and early progressive rock, skilfully weaving wistful laments and riff-laden rockers into a fully cohesive whole. This first-ever authorised reissue of what is now a highly sought-after LP adds three tracks that appeared on the variant US release of the album as well as the band s version of the Spirit track Water Woman , only released at the time as a UK single. With some superb previously unpublished photos, new band quotes and master-tape sound quality, this longoverdue release is the first to assemble all known Pacific Drift recordings under one roof, and is unquestionably the definitive anthology of an unfairly neglected band.Plaster Casters USA / Tomorrow Morning Brings / Feelin Free / Just Another Girl / Garden Of Love / Norman / Grain Of Sand / Greta The Legend / Going Slow / God Has Given Me / Happy Days / Bonus Tracks - Yes You Do / We Re On Our Way / Don’t Turn Away / Water Woman | |

| Released 08/06/09. Throughout the 1950s, Tal Farlow dominated modern jazz guitar. Self-taught, Farlow quickly became revered for his adventurous sense of harmony and a breathtaking virtuosic technique, earning him the nickname ‘The Octopus’ due to his large hands and long fingers.Something of a jazz poster boy, Farlow first captured the public’s attention as one-third of vibraphonist Red Norvo’s Trio (the other member was Charles Mingus). In 1953, Farlow went solo producing recordings of outstanding quality. A long overdue re-press for this two-CD set that comprises Farlow in Los Angeles fronting some of that city’s finest. Lights, Camera, Doo Wop! |
| gscr031 |
| Released 22/06/09. As a follow up to the acclaimed movie-themed compilation ‘Crime Scene USA’, Giant Steps Recordings again looks to Hollywood for ‘LIGHTS! CAMERA! DOO WOP!’ Real or just imagined, Doo Wop has become synonymous with the early 1950s and, in turn, the emergence of teenage culture and what is believed to be coming-of-age innocence. Very much an American phenomenon, Doo Wop has embedded itself in that nation’s psyche to the extent that its presence is regularly heard on the soundtracks of numerous big box office films.Whether underscoring mobster movies such as Martin Scorsese’s ‘Mean Streets’ and ‘Goodfellas’ or emphasising the rites of passage story lines of such timeless teen classics as ‘American Graffiti’ and ‘Diner’, the 28 tracks included here are an indication of just how widespread is this genre’s appeal. In the same way as many of today’s Gangsta Rappers project a violent image, it was assumed that some of the tough looking Doo Wop groups were hoodlums with gang connections. True or false, the one thing they all had in common was they were smartly dressed in matching stage clothes and indulged in varying degrees of choreography. Stardancer |
| cdlem128 |
| Released 15/06/09. Rapp stated that Stardancer was the first album since the first Pearls album One Nation Underground over which he had full control. The fierce anti-war song "Fourth Day of July", with its references to "the broken children of Vietnam", was widely played in "underground" circles of the time. The lighthearted "Summer of '55" contains some of Rapp's cleverest aphorisms, such as "When the day breaks / the pieces fall on you". Two of his other songs, "Stardancer" and "For The Dead In Space", reflect on themes of loss against a background of space travel and can be seen as reworkings of Like most of the Pearls Before Swine albums, the sleeve design used classic art works, in this case the painting "Descent of the Rebel Angels" by Pieter Brueghel the Elder on the front sleeve, and a William Morris background design on the reverse.Pearls Before Swine's earlier "Rocket Man". Cozy Powell

| cdlem130 |
| Released 15/06/09. Considered to be one of England's best drummers, and very much in demand for rock and pop records, Cozy Powell was almost legendary for a heavy-hitting style that could be made to work with many kinds of rock music, whether for the thundering pop productions helmed by Mickie Most, Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake & Powell, or even his own solo work (notably "Dance with the Devil," which was a major English hit in 1973.)Powell began his professional music career in 1965 with the Sorcerers, eventually winding up working with Jeff Beck after Beck left the Yardbirds. In 1971, Powell formed Bedlam, but eventually abandoned this project to produce singles such as "Dance with the Devil." He later formed Cozy Powell's Hammer, which broke up in 1975. After a brief sabbatical, he joined Rainbow, helping to give the band a thundering rhythm section before quitting after four years and four albums in 1980. Always in demand for the drum seat, he alternated between session work and working in a variety of bands, including the Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath, never staying in any one band for very long. In 1996, he worked with former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green on his long-awaited comeback tour. At the time of his death on April 5, 1998, he was recuperating from a foot injury that had sidelined him from touring work with guitarist Yngvie Malmsteen. He was driving on the M4 Motorway towards Bristol when he apparently lost control of his car (due to bad weather), slamming into the center divider of the motorway. He died a few hours later in the hospital. Cat Moves / Hot Rock / Jekyll & Hyde / Living A Lie / Sooner Or Later / Sunset / The Blister / The Right Side | |

Teenage Heaven – The Fifties Girl Group Phenomenon |
| acmem173cd |
| Released 22/06/09. Teenage Heaven is a unique large-scale musical survey of the girl group explosion of 1958, comprising the best, most historically significant and rarest selections from the vanguard of the genre. Although the phenomenon actually reached its height between 1960 and 1963, The Chantel's 1958 song Maybe is generally regarded as the first girl group recording to break into the mainstream and it is included here along with hits by such popular contemparies as The Shirelles, The Poni-Tails and The Bobbettes. Of the lesser known items, Threeteens forgotten ode to the G.I Elvis Presley ‘Dear 533-10761’, The Deltairs ‘A Schoolgirl in Love’ and The Baby Dolls ‘Go Away Baby’ are all examples of clever, passionate, original songwriting that still speaks to us today; genuinely independent music that blew the cobwebs off the fifties and in it¹s energy and ambition parallels the punk rock explosion of twenty years later. Made In England |
| crseg003 |
| Released 22/06/09. Long established as one of the minor classics of the British psychedelic pop genre, the Bulldog Breed album Made In England was recorded in mid-1969 but not released by Deram Nova until the beginning of the following year - by which time its thrilling Spirit-of-’67 mod/psych sound and commitment to hook-laden, sub-three minute songs was fatally out of sync with the self-indulgence and bombast of the nascent progressive rock era. Taken from the original master tapes, this 2009 retooling adds both sides of the group’s equally essential pre-album single, ‘Portcullis Gate’ b/w ‘Halo In My Hair’. With new band quotes, rare photos and, for the first time, the full lowdown on Bulldog Breed’s convoluted story – including how vice queen Janie Jones came to make a cameo appearance on standout track ‘Austin Osmanspare’ – this is the definitive reissue of a much-loved, highly collectable psychedelic pop album. | Now Sounds | The Golden Gate
Year One |
| crnow12 |
| Released 29/06/09. The Golden Gate was the brainchild of Reid Whitelaw and Billy Carl, two songwriters reeling from the recent success of penning and singing on the 1910 Fruitgum Company’s 1968 hit “Goody Goody Gumdrops.”1969’s Year One would follow a different path. Aided with some of New York and Philadelphia’s finest studio musicians—and the background vocals of none other than members of The Tradewinds (“New York’s A Lonely Town”)—The Golden Gate bridged lushly orchestrated soft pop, Bacharach-influenced Brill pop, Beach Boys/Four Seasons-influenced harmonies, with slight bubblegum affectations. The Golden Gate was not long for this world and ceased operation shortly after the release of this, their lone LP. Coveted by Japanese soft pop collectors for years, it’s not uncommon for mint original copies of Year One to fetch three figures. Making its worldwide cd debut, Year One is augmented by 7 Bonus Tracks, which were culled directly from original master tapes. | Rev-Ola | Grady Martin
Roughneck Blues 1949 – 1956 |
| crband26 |
| Released 08/06/09. Grady Martin plays the memorable riff on Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman." That alone makes him candidate for Rock'n'Roll sainthood. However, he also helped invent 'guitar distortion.' A tube was blown in the middle of a take at a Marty Robbins session and the resulting fuzz-toned solo was left in the song, the 1961 smash hit "Don't Worry."Besides Chet Atkins, Martin was the only studio musician to play with both Hank Williams AND Elvis Presley. Grady Martin is one of the true legends of Nashville's original "A-Team". He led Red Foley's band on the ABC-TV show Ozark Jubilee. With a strong business relationship with legendary Decca A&R man Owen Bradley, Martin began to record instrumental singles and LPs for Decca. This is a long overdue re-press for this definitive 32 track CD of Grady Martin's greatest moments! Listen and weep! | Released 29/06/09. The complete recordings of this well respected Merseybeat act during their career (1963-1967). Best known on record for their own song ‘Everything’s Alright’, in part through their own recording being regarded as one of the classic ‘Mersey Sound’ tracks ever, as well as it making the top 10, and later through David Bowie covering it on PIN UPS. The complete recordings are bookended by their very first recording and their last. | Released 29/06/09. An immediate supergroup in their native Australia - Little River Band went on to enjoy success worldwide. Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles and Graham Goble were all well-known, chart hitting musicians in Australia in their own right before coming together in the mid-1970's to form Little River Band. Their country-rock sound, reminiscent of The Eagles, was geared toward American success and they enjoyed the fruits of this with their third album, Diamantina Cocktail, which included the hit single "Help Is On Its Way" - and the follow up album Sleeper Catcher became the first recorded in Australia to hit the number one spot in the US chart. "Live Exposure" features a concert the band played in Houston, Texas in October 1981 - and features US hit singles "It's A Long Way There", "Help Is On Its Way", "Happy Anniversary" and "Reminiscing".It's A Long Way There / Man On Your Mind /Mistress Of Mine /Happy Anniversary / Don't Let The Needle Win / Reminiscing / Ballerina / Cool Change / The Night Owls / Help Is On Its Way / Lonesome Loser / It's Not A Wonder Lady / Just Say That You Love Me | |
Korn
Who Then Now? |
| ppcr026 |
| Released 29/06/09. For the first time on DVD, this is everything you could want for a Korn fan. Korn's alternative metal sound positioned the group among the most popular to emerge during the post-grunge era in the mid-1990's. Besides the videos (which include a completely uncut video of Faget), there is a fantastic amount of informal and interesting footage, including the band playing basketball, early gigs, getting fairly inebriated, and stories about how the band originally got together. Rated explicit to cover some direct vernacular. An absolute classic!Blind / Shoots And Ladders / Clown / Faget / Twist / Porno Creep / Good God / Wicked / Lowrider / Kill you | |
