Boyce & Hart
I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite. The Best Of
CRREV113
Bobby Hart and Tommy Boyce were pop-meisters who wrote songs for the early Phil Spector productions among many others, but perhaps their best known project was The Monkees! Turned down for roles early in the auditions, they landed the perhaps more artistically satisfying and lucrative roles as writer/producers for the music content of the show. Indeed, it was their own band, The Candy Store Prophets, who ghosted for The Monkees on their early sessions, including all the early hits and successful album tracks.

Gorgeous CD collection of Boyce and Hart's hits and album classics; lovingly re- mastered, beautifully packaged and with many never before seen photos and featuring a treasure trove of ultra rare photos and trade ads.

Liner notes by noted Monkees-ologist Andrew Sandoval and the notes include quotes from both Bobby Hart and the late Tommy Boyce.

Solomon Burke
Proud Mary
CRREV187
Released on 01/03/10. Soul, Gospel, and Country legend Solomon Burke has been in the news recently as his comeback albums "Don't Give Up On Me", (featuring songs written specifically for the album by Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.) and "Nashville" (with guests Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch and Patty Loveless.) have been critically acclaimed and very successful. Sell-out touring and TV appearances with the likes of Jon Spencer and Jools Holland have also brought this Rock n Roll Hall of Fame-er right back into the public eye.

All of which makes Rev-Ola even prouder to present perhaps his best album from his first classic run, "Proud Mary". Featuring the monster hit version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival standard, together with a whole bunch more from the Daddy of soul!

David McWilliams
The Days Of David McWilliams
RPM225
An Irish folk rock artist who in 1967 released three albums of his own material on the Major Minor label. An amazing period of productivity matched by the amazing consistency of quality throughout all the material he wrote and recorded. Musically he backed himself on 6 and 12 string guitar with further arrangements and orchestration provided by the then wunderkind producer Mike Leander.

The combination of McWilliams heartfelt lyrics and songstyle with Leanders evocative arrangements of the simple melodies still sound bewitching today. 'The Days Of Pearly Spencer' was covered by Marc Almond in the early 90's and 'Three O'Clock Flamingo Street' is another radio favourite.

Ward" whose patron is Sir Tim Rice, support all attempts to promote the aims and works of Clifford T. Ward. As a testament to his timeless genius, in June 2002, Clifford finished above The Beatles in a BBC Radio 2 poll on the best music released during the Queen's reign. Unfortunately Clifford wasn't around to witness this as he sadly died in December 2001 at the age of 57

Cherry Tree
Jan Dukes De Grey
Strange Terrain
CRTREE007
Responsible for two of the strangest, most beguiling acid folk albums of the early 1970s, Jan Dukes de Grey have long been a legendary name on the prog/folk/psych collector circuit. When Cherry Tree reissued Sorcerers and the extraordinary Mice And Rats In The Loft on one handy double CD last year (to widespread acclaim, we might add), it seemed to be the final word on the band. However, during conversations with arch-Duke Derek Noy the band’s founder, guitarist, singer and songwriter it transpired that Jan Dukes had actually gone on to record a third album, Strange Terrain, that had failed to appear at the time, largely due to the emergence of punk and the ensuing Collapse of Western Civilisation As We Know It.

And here it is, complete with a handful of bonus tracks cut during the same timeframe (including the novelty single Standing In A Little Ole, issued under the band’s punk-era pseudonym Rip Snorter). Dark, sombre and mysterious, Strange Terrain retains the boundless spirit of adventure and idiosyncratic approach to music-making that characterised their earlier albums, and is a vital addition to Jan Dukes de Grey’s small but fascinating body of recorded work.

Since meeting around a decade earlier, Paul and Keith had been in various bands together before Blueboy, and had sent previous demos to Sarah. However, it was the demo for Clearer, which was released in 1991 as their first single, which got them their deal.

Whilst their initial releases were gentle and acoustic, they expanded into a full band, with bass, drums, keyboards and cello, and eventually including Harvey Williams on guitar.

Some Like It Hot
ACMEM183CD
Hectic slapstick, smartass movie parodies, sexist stereotyping, crass one-liners, and bad taste galore Time Out 1984 Voted Funniest Movie of All Time by the American Film Institute, Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot is a milestone of film comedy. Its originality and wit, combined with a sense of danger has rarely been duplicated and, in the history of cinema, never equalled.

In a story of increasingly wild absurdity, it follows the antics of two idiot musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) who, after witnessing the St Valentine's Day Massacre, struggle to escape the gangsters by dressing up in drag and joining an all-girl band (a band fronted by Marilyn Monroe in arguably her finest screen performance). Comic complications aplenty ensue when Tony Curtis -now a pouting girlie strives to express his lust for Marilyn, while Jack Lemmon equally high-voiced and simpering -is being pursued by an amorous Joe E Brown, who has one of the funniest -and most radical -final punch-lines in screen comedy.

Our expanded edition comprises; the original 1959 jazz soundtrack, with all of Marilyn’s songs from the film, supplemented, for the first time, with the Marilyn Monroe non-album single Some Like It Hot, jazz guitarist Barney Kessel’s album of themes from the film and three vocal takes by the great Jack Lemmon.

Beat Scene
Jack Kerouac: His Contemporaries And Influences
ACMEM184CD
Released on 15/03/10. In the fifties, with Allen Ginsberg and William S Burroughs, Jack Kerouac was instrumental in starting the Beat movement. The acknowledged leader and spokesman of the group, it was he who first used the term Beat Generation to express despair over the suppressed state of the individual in society and belief in the natural world and in the powers of the beat of jazz music and poetry.

The Beats rejected the prevailing academic attitude to poetry and declared, through their art and attitudes, their alienation and disgust with shallow American middle-class values. Ginsbergs Howl, and William Burroughs Naked Lunch both became the focus of much publicised obscenity trials and Kerouac’s On The Road, became one of the most controversial and best selling American novels of the 20th century.

Ashkan
In From The Cold
CRSEG013
Led by future Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston, Ashkan were together for only a matter of months before imploding.

However, they did leave behind a small but perfectly-formed legacy in the shape of In From The Cold, a blistering, 52-minute slab of turn-of-the-decade British psychedelic / progressive blues rock that, in January 1970, became the first release on Decca’s new underground label Decca Nova.

With Weston’s frenzied, proto-metal guitar heroics matched all the way by Steve Bailey s powerful, Spooky Tooth-style lead vocals, the album received encouraging reviews, only for the band to split on the eve of its release. Now a major collectable, In From The Cold has been heavily bootlegged over the last couple of decades, but now receives a long-overdue, first-ever official reissue.

Arthur Brown
Speak No Tech / Requiem
CDLEM158
Requiem is an end-of-the-world concept album that comes on with a bang, not a whimper, and may well be the best thing that Arthur Brown has ever done!

It's got all of the sonic excess you'd expect from the man who gave us Fire , but Brown's ornate art-rock tendencies are invariably backed up with enough visceral punch to make them marvellously affecting, not merely affected, while producer Earl Mankey handles the electronics well enough to maintain an unusually high level of interest and detail.

Amen
Death Before Musick
IBIRD0010CD
Released 15/03/10. Few bands in recent times have had the fearsome reputation of Amen. Their unrelenting, uncompromising power and fury has made them one of the most adored and respected names of the generation.

Led by front-man Casey Chaos a man who quite literally bleeds for his art -the impressive 'Death Before Musick', saw the band signing to the EatUrMusic label, run by System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian,

There's no question that this album, produced by Chaos and Malakian, is a tirade, a tornado of emotions. But for Chaos, it wasn't the birth of a fresh era for Amen, but meant to be the end of the line. He had poured so much of himself into the record, one that was the climactic, darkly orgiastic conclusion for Amen, or should have been.......

Great 60s Instrumentals
TBIRD0004CD
Released on 15/03/10. In the twenty first century Rock and Pop instrumentals are no longer a force on the music charts but there was a time, a brief golden era, when Instros ruled.

The classic Rock and Roll era of the 1950’s and 1960’s brought to the fore countless instantly recognizable instrumental hits and many are featured on this groovy little collection.

All the tracks featured on this CD are cover versions of the original hits but that’s not to say they are in any way inferior to their better known twin brothers and sisters. Quite the contrary, most of these songs were considered standards and were recorded time and time again by a host of different recording artists back in the day.

Tracks such as Pipeline, Wipe Out, Memphis and Telstar are almost indistinguishable from the original versions and in some cases are cleaner and edgier than the hits. It’s no wonder as some of the musicians featured here had serious Rock and Surf credibility, having written and performed on many records of the genre, including Jan and Dean, Ronnie and The Daytonas and Gary Lewis & The Playboys among others. Most of the tracks featuring horns would have been produced by William Beasley withoots Randolph playing sax and leading the band.

Boots had a successful recording career as well as working with everyone from Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison to Ronnie Hawkins and REO Speedwagon. This is good crusin’ music...Good music is timeless!

Joe Maphis
Fire On The Strings
TBIRD0015CD
Released on 15/03/10. All Time Country Classic ! Joe’s classic 1957 instrumental masterpiece Features performances by Johnny Bond, Rose Lee Maphis & Larry Collins.

There's a reason why Joe Maphis was called 'King Of The Strings ' because he had so much ability that whenever he picked up any string instrument, he could almost play it straight off. No lessons required, just a natural aptitude, he was almost without peer in the world of country during the 1950s and 1960s and the album title Fire On The Strings is more than just hyperbole.

He was most renowned for playing a double neck Mosrite guitar and can lay claim to being perhaps the first musician to use this instrument.

His 1953 hit 'Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)'; This would subsequently be covered by Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, on the 1976 compilation 'Sleepless Nights'.

Early Country And Western From Bullet Records - Nashville
TBIRD0016CD
The Bullet Recording And Transcription Company was formed in late 1945 by former Grand Old Opry booking agent Jim Bulliet. Bullet Records was one of the first of what has come to be known as the "post war indies" and was initially one of the most successful. In early 1948 Bulliets' partners bought him out and put Overton Ganong, for-merly with Capitol Records, in charge of the label and the company began to concentrate on Hillbilly and R&B recordings. Overton Ganong bailed out in 1952 and Red Wortham was brought in as a partner.

Blind singer/song-writer Leon Payne was one of the best selling artists for Bullet Records and his classics "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me" and "Lost Highway" were covered by Hank Williams.

Many of the Bullet country artists were from Texas and Ray Price's very first record "Jealous Lies" b/w "Your Wedding Corsage" was recorded there and it shows the humble beginning of an artist who would grow to be an institution in the music business.

Bullet Records launched the careers of many spirited performers, but more importantly they launched the record business in Nashville and for that Bullet Records will always be remembered as an important part of American musical history.

Night Gallery & Teach The World To Laugh
CRAIC004
The Barron Knights are a British humorous pop group, originally formed in 1959, they became the Barron Knights on 5th October 1960. Although the Barron Knights undoubtedly had their own style and produced regular beat group recordings in their own right, it was their production of comedy parodies that brought them the greatest success. In fact, their catalogue of recordings -although impressive does not reflect their success as stage entertainers.

By adapting their act to each new wave of emerging performers they were able to survive longer than their more conventional contemporaries, and even today can still be regularly found in cabaret or performing a seaside summer season.

The Association
Birthday
CRNOW15
Released on 29/03/10. To many of The Association s fans, Birthday, their fourth studio album, ranks as the group s very best offering. The Billboard Pop #23 LP sported a Top 10 single, Everything That Touches You , and the Top 40 hit, Time For Livin’ Birthday was a transitional album that found the band and their producer Bones Howe at odds with each other.

The group desired more representation of their original compositions, and their insistence on this resulted in the most lushly produced effort the band ever recorded.

The 16-page, full-colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of original band members and Bones Howe.

Bojoura
Night Flight Night Sight
CRREV300
Released on 29/03/10. Born in The Hague, The Netherlands, the lovely Bojoura was discovered by George Kooymans of the rock band Golden Earring(s), who went on to write and produce many of her songs.

A wonderful singer of orchestral psychpop in the vein of Dana Gillespie, with her own unique sexy style reminiscent of the immortal Mariska Veres, Bojoura's records featured many of the top figures of Nederbeat and were successful both on the underground scene and in the mainstream charts, where she remains a fixture in Holland to this day...

Here we have the contents of her amazing first album plus bonus tracks from 45s...an unknown psych-pop extravaganza which breathes the exotic free and easy atmosphere of Holland in the 1960s: a fusion of Nederbeat and Ye Ye which will delight!

I Can't Stop Rambling / Watch What You Try To Do / Holiday / Looking For The Land / For Baby / Dream Man / Everybody's Day / Mr. Magic / Looking For The Land (Part 2) / Hampstead Incident / Where Are You / That's How Strong My Love Is

Maffitt & Davies
The Rise And Fall Of Honesty
CRREV301
Released on 29/03/10. A masterpiece of psychedelic Americana: Maffitt & Davies came with the same batch of oddities on Capitol as Euphoria, Food and Common People. A strange batch to be sure, of orchestral psychpop and folk-rock which is only now being rediscovered and loved...

There are many gems on this exceptional album... Bob Dylan’s Just Like A Woman is transformed into heartbreaking orchestrated folkrock... Forest Lawn, the album’s undeservedly failed single, has a distinct Face to Face Kink¹s sound replete with dobro and freaky church organ. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues the other Dylan cover on this record takes a Byrds/Everly Brothers vocal harmony approach reminiscent of nothing less than late 60s Dillards on their folk-rock outings.

A visionary slice of American music that predates the alt. country/folk boom by a mile -dark lyrics, strings, phasing and tablas abound. In addition to the album, we have a batch of outtakes and single tracks which will take your breath away; all in all a wonderful new discovery....

Just Like A Woman / Landscape Grown Cold / Big Time Man / Kingswood Manor / Time Of Towns / Forest Lawn / Tom Thumb's Blues / City Sidewalks / You'll Never Know / Lungi Dal Caro Beni / Bonus Tracks - Parade / Quietly Blow My Mind / Come Back Moma / Things / Red Flowers / A Kind Word / Twelve Golden Strings

The Best Seat In The House - A Cock Sparrer Story
Steve Bruce
book_cocksparrer
Released 29/03/10. Cock Sparrer are widely considered to be one of the most influential street-punk bands in history, and helped pave the way for the late-1970s punk scene and the Oi! subgenre. The band s fate has been to enjoy a career trajectory the polar opposite of that which the industry promotes and aspires to commercial success eluded them during the 70s and 80s, but the 1990’s punk revival saw them rediscovered by hordes of new younger fans across the globe. As a result, they now enjoy huge success as a live attraction, particularly in the UK, USA and Europe, and find themselves head-lining bills above far more familiar names and performing their own sold out shows to crowds which many of their contemporaries would sell their own grandmothers for. Best Seat In The House tells the band s story from the perspective of drummer and driving force, Steve Bruce.

Haywoode
Arrival
CRPOP37
Released on 15/02/10. London-born Sidney Haywoode trained from an early age at London's prestigious Corona Stage Academy and was signed by CBS in 1983, following numerous acting, singing, dancing and modelling roles in the West End, in films and on TV.

Debut single, 'A Time Like This', reached the Top 5 in the US Hot Dance Club Play Chart and immediately established her distinctive brand of spirited, soulful funk/pop. Via a succession of singles - including two forgotten gems by then-little-known underground dance producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman, 'You'd Better Not Fool Around' and 'Getting Closer' (covered later by Kylie) - full international chart success finally struck for Haywoode with 'Roses' in July 1986. The long-awaited 'Arrival' album was finally unveiled, showcasing new tracks including Haywoode's take on Prince's debut hit 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. The album soon became a much-sought-after 'lost classic' of the era, with CDs from Japan (the only territory releasing the format beyond vinyl and cassette) still regularly fetching ridiculous prices on eBay.

Included with this full-to-capacity 17-track digitally-remastered Special Edition CD are 7 Bonus tracks plus a comprehensive colour booklet of pictures, analysis, photo discography, lyrics and exclusive brand new interviews with Haywoode herself and those involved with her career.

Bomb The Bass
Into The Dragon Plus
CRPOP42
Bomb The Bass exploded into the UK singles charts with their debut single Beat Dis in February 1988, reaching number 2. Initially little was known about the people behind the record as it appeared from nowhere and was released on an unknown label, Mister-Ron Records, as it turned out an imprint of Rhythm King Records. Reputedly costing £500 to record Beat Dis was a record of moment, marking the shift away from expensive recording studios to more homemade record making, utilising the increasingly affordable sampling technology that was at the heart of the band’s output.

The band went on to produce 3 further albums (with another one on the way in 2010) that refused to be formula or predictable. The development of the sound/direction is a lasting feature of their output.

Beat Dis (Us 7 Mix) / Megablast Rap (Version) Featuring Merlin / On The Cut / Don T Make Me Wait / Dynamite Beats / Mega Blast (Hip Hop On Precinct 13) / Hey You! / Shake It / Say A Little Prayer / Beat Dat (Freestyle Scratch Mix) / Bonus Tracks- Beat Dis (Gangster Boogie inc. Belouis Some
Some People New Master Edition
CRPOP15
Released on 01/02/10. Born Neville Keighley, Some released his first LP Some People in 1985 and the title track was a club hit.

Although Some's contribution to the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, "Round, Round," did not penetrate the mainstream, it introduced Some to an audience outside of discotheques. Produced by Bernard Edwards, "Round, Round" had enough electric guitars to seduce rock fans while maintaining the interest of the dance crowd with its pounding groove.

Imagination , a song from Some People , was reissued in 1986, peaking at number 17 on the U.K. pop charts. Both Some People and Imagination were remixed several times. In 1987, Some recorded his self-titled second album, but it failed to duplicate the success of his debut.

Some then disappeared from the music scene, lost in an '80s "Where Are They Now?" file until 1993 when he released Living Your Life.

Zakarrias
Zakarrias
CRTREE006
Released on 22/02/10. Recorded in London in the summer of 1971 by Austrian singer/songwriter Bobby Haumer and an English pick-up band, Zakarrias was issued on the highly collectable Deram label. However, Deram withdrew the album almost immediately when they discovered that Haumer didn’ t have a work permit and therefore had to return to Austria. The result is one of the rarest slabs of early Seventies vinyl, original copies having sold for in excess of $1000 on the rare occasions that they surface.

Full of unexpected melodic shifts, and with an overwhelming sense of space and unresolved tension, the album skilfully blends singer/songwriter introversion with elements of folk, blues, psychedelia and progressive rock.

Antonio Carlos Jobim
The Music Of
ACMEM181CD
Released on 22/02/10. The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim combines rare Brazilian recordings by the pioneers of bossa nova to document the vital first year of the genre. Beginning with João Gilberto's Desafinado, that introduced the world to this exciting new style, so simple, yet so shockingly sensual.

In addition to Gilberto, the programme comprises six absolutely essential cuts from Silvia Telles, perhaps the finest interpreter of Jobim's compositions and important contributions from the virtuoso guitarists Luiz Bonfa and Bola Sete, the organist Walter Wanderley and amongst others the Brazilian Sinatra, Dick Farney.

We have also included the Jobim compositions from the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), the success of which did so much to bring bossa nova to world attention, including a historic recording of A Felicidade by the star of the movie, Marpessa Dawn. It is a musical snapshot of Rio de Janeiro in 1959.

João Gilberto - Desafinado (Off-Key) / Silvia Telles – Dindi / Silvia Telles - Discussão (Discussion) / Silvia Telles - Fotografia (Photograph) / Silvia Telles - Demais (Too Much) / Silvia Telles - Canta Canta Mais (Sing, Sing Some More) / Silvia Telles - Só Em Teus Braços (Only In Your Arms) / Walter Wanderley - Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba) / Walter Wanderley - Meditação (Meditation) / Trio Nagô - Chega De Saudade (No More Blues) / Dick Farney - Amor Sem Adeus (Love Without Goodbye) / Luiz Bonfá - Amor Sem Adeus / Luiz Bonfá – Eurydice / Norma Bengell - Sucedeu Assim (It Happened Like That) / Norma Bengell - Eu Preciso De Você (I Need You) / Bola Sete - Eu Preciso De Você / Lenita Bruno - Por Toda Minha Vida (For All My Life) / Lenita Bruno - As Praias Desertas (The Empty Beach) / Agostinho Dos Santos - Estrada Do Sol (Road To The Sun) / Elizete Cardoso - Vida Bela (Beautiful Life) / Walter Wanderley - Este Seu Olhar (That Look You Wear) / Alaide Costa - Estrada Branca (White Road) / Leo Peracchi - Coffee Delight / Marpessa Dawn - A Felicidade From Orfeu Negro / O Nosso Amor (Tambourine And Accordian) From Orfe Negro / Luiz Bonfá - Scene Du Lever Du Soleil From Orfeu Negro

Blossom Dearie
Little Jazz Bird
ACMEM182CD
Released on 22/02/10. Blossom Dearie was one of the unique jazz voices of the second half of the 20th century; one of the great interpreters of American song in the post-war era. She liked to describe herself as a songwriters singer. Blossom Dearie’s work blurred the line between jazz and cabaret. An interpretive minimalist with caviar taste in songs and musicians, she was a genre unto herself. Her preference was for small groups comprising the best jazz musicians available. In the late fifties (the period covered by Little Jazz Bird) these groups invariably featured the guitarists Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis and Mundell Lowe, the bassist Ray Brown and the drummers Jo Jones and Ed Thigpen, with Dearie’s own piano playing by no means outclassed by such stellar performers.

Released on 01/02/10. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes of 1948 is simply one of the most extraordinary and important British films in cinema history. An exhuberant, lavish, daring, technicolor epic that has influenced generations of filmmakers, artists and aspiring ballerinas. Although made in the late forties, The Red Shoes is decades ahead of its time; it is shown regularly on television and is regarded as the definitive film about the world of dance.

Brian Easdale won an Oscar for his score and was described by Powell as the ideal collaborator . This is an internationally celebrated piece of work and in the 80s, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese did much to bring attention to Powell’s work which they both cited as a major influence.

Philamore Lincoln
The North Wind Blew South
CRSEG011
Released on 14/02/10. One of the most mysterious albums of the late Sixties, British singer/songwriter Philamore Lincoln’s US-only release The North Wind Blew South including his original version of Temma Harbour, a song that became a Top Ten hit for Mary Hopkin - has attracted plenty of conjecture over the years, much of it concerning the alleged involvement of the Yardbirds (Chris Dreja took the album photo, while Jimmy Page contributed a fierce lead guitar break to one of the standout tracks, You’re The One ).

This first-ever official reissue of a much-counterfeited set finally sets the record straight about the elusive Mr. Lincoln and his highly convoluted musical history, which included previous pseudonymous stints as jazz drummer Phil Kinorra and blue-eyed soulster Julien Covey (whose A Little Bit Hurt single had been highly popular in Swinging London discotheques).

Move Ass Baby
CDLEM154
Released 15/02/10. Though lacking the teenage venom of cuts such as 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog from The Stooges and the unadulterated raw power of, well, Raw Power, Move Ass Baby is still essential for die-hard fans. The album, culled from rehearsals in Detroit, for the band's 1973 tour, runs the gamut from full-fledged, ready-to record tunes to the types of swampy jams that the band has claimed indicative of their studio songwriting process.

This album explores the creative process that gave birth to nearly all the Stooges albums. Starting with a jam session, an oldie or two, or maybe a blues riff, the songs gradually took shape and were refined from there. Here we find the Stooges in rehearsal, messing around with songs by Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Cream, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

We hear the beginnings of songs that never went any further, such as Old King Live Forever , I Come From Nowhere or Wild Love , which had as much potential as any of their best material. And we have some very impromptu jams such as Move Ass Baby and a fascinating James Williamson solo performance. Much of this material has never been heard before.

I Got A Right / Gimme Some Skin / I'm Sick Of You / Tight Pants / Scene Of The Crime / Wild Love / I Come From Nowhere / I'm So Glad / Delta Blues Shuffle / Old King Live Forever / Look So Sweet / I'm A Man / Mellow Down Easy / Move Ass Baby

Ava Cherry And The Astronettes
People From Bad Homes
CDLEM155
People from Bad Homes is an album recorded by The Astronettes. It was belatedly released in 1995, 22 years after it was recorded. The Astronettes were a trio of backing singers recruited by singer David Bowie, debuting at The 1980 Floor Show fan club concert recorded on 18-20 October 1973 at the Marquee Club, London. They consisted of his then girlfriend Ava Cherry, his old schoolfriend Geoffrey MacCormack, under the alias Warren Peace, and Jason Guess, a friend of Cherry's. Bowie attempted to propel the group to fame, shortly afterwards taking them to London's Olympic Studios to record an album with himself as producer. The sessions were eventually abandoned as Bowie's own album, Diamond Dogs, took up more of his time. The masters remained in the possession of Tony DeFries, then manager of both Bowie and the Astronettes, while the group became backing singers on Bowie's subsequent American tour, and the album Young Americans.

I Am Divine / I Am A Laser / Seven Days / God Only Knows / Having A Good Time / People From Bad Homes / Highway Blues / Only Me / Things To Do / How Could I Be Such A Fool / I'm In The Mood For Love / Spirits In The Night

Dana Gillespie
Andy Warhol
CDLEM156
Dana Gillespie is nowadays known as a blues/R&B/jazz singer, but in her younger years she had two brief (but impressive) alternative careers. In 1967/68 she made two albums of folk pop, Foolish Seasons and Box Of Surprises. A long time friend and lover of David Bowie, she sang backing vocals on Ziggy Stardust and was signed to Bowie’s management company Mainman. For that company, she made two LPs, the superb Weren’t Born A Man (1973) and Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle (1974). Despite production from David Bowie, Mick Ronson and Robin Cable, and the support of the best studio musicians of the day, neither album was a hit and Gillespie concentrated on her sex-bomb film career before reinventing herself as a bawdy blues mama in the 1980s.

Boogie In My Bones ~ The Early Years 1957-1960
PDROPCD8
Released on 15/02/10. The tail end of the fifties proved a pivotal period in the history of Jamaican music. The indigenous Calypso-flavoured stylings of Mento gradually gave way to home-grown R&B, which in turn paved the way for the Ska sounds that were to dominate the early years of the following decade. And at the heart of each of these developments was Jamaica’s first singing superstar: Laurel Aiken. Featuring all of Laurel’s major Jamaican hits before his relocation to London in 1960, Boogie In My Bones highlights the Mento and raw R&B flavoured recordings that established him as the Island’s number one performer.

Mahalia Jackson
The Essence Of Mahalia Jackson
SBIRD0008CD
Released on 22/02/10. Mahalia Jackson born on October 26 1911, the third of six children was born into object poverty living in a three room shack which was also home to twelve other members of her family including aunts and cousins as well as her brothers.

She sang in local Baptist churches and most often at the Mount Mariah Baptist Church, the place her family attended. In 1927 at the age of sixteen Mahalia caught a train to Chicago. All she had was a suitcase, she still lived in the slums and worked as a maid but she was in Chicago!

In the late forties she signed with the Apollo label and recorded W. Herbert Brewsters Move On Up A Little Higher . This recording exploded across America, the sonic boom of her powerful dustbowl gospel voice resonated from Los Angeles to the Eastern seaboard and the song sold a staggering 8,000,000 copies. Stores nationwide couldnt keep up with the demand, selling out as soon as they could stock up! So, Mahalia Jackson became a superstar, Europe wanted to see in person this voice from the Gods, so Mahalia Jackson went to Europe with an orchestra and sang her words, the word to thousands over there.

Throughout that seismic decade of change and confrontation she became an irresistible force for the good of the civil rights movement but as the decade wore on she decided to step out of the political window. This lady is as relevant and significant to gospel and soul, real soul, now as she was back then, back when she had to pass the plate around in church.

Gladys Knight & The Pips
Visions
SBIRD0010CD
Released on 22/02/10. For a time in the 1960s and 1970s, Gladys Knight & The Pips were clearly among the elite in the pop world, right up with the best groups of the era.

Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1944. In 1952 she won the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour', a talent show on national television and by the age of nine she'd formed the first version of the Pips with her brother Bubba, plus cousins Their first hit happened in '61 with a cover of 'Every Beat Of My Heart' and in 1966, they switched from original label Vee-Jay to Motown and had a massive success with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine', which became the fastest-selling single in Motown history up until that point.

Over the next several years, the group had a string of hits and awards behind them, before joining the Buddha roster, which led to the biggest hit of their career in 1973, namely 'Midnight Train To Georgia'.

Another label change in 1980 to Columbia, led in 1981 to the release of the album 'Touch' and to 'Visions' two years later which gave the group a number one r&b hit in America with 'Save The Overtime (For Me)'.

Her performances throughout this album are nothing short of stunning. Listen to the way she handles 'Hero', with a bravura aplomb that really does indicate that she had a grasp of bringing the gospel approach to soul, while never sacrificing her sensuality. And 'Heaven sent' is tailor made for her vocals.

Carl Perkins
Whole Lotta Shakin / On Top
TBIRD0009CD
Relesed 22/02/10. Carl Perkins was born into humble beginnings and spent his early years picking cotton but by his teens he was playing electric guitar and in a band with his brothers and was signed to Sun Records by Sam Phillips in 1954.

From his Sun sessions came Blue Suede Shoes which reached the top of all the charts and became Sun Records first million seller. He was involved in a serious car crash on his way to a national V show which put him and his brother in hospital and nearly ended his career. His 1964 UK Tour saw him greeted as a conquering hero, playing to sold out houses and being particularly lauded by a young group called the Beatles, who played and recorded a number of his songs.

Whole Lotta Shakin was recorded on June 3rd and 4th 1958 and On Top in 1969. Among the real highlights are Champagne Illinoise a collaboration between Perkins and Bob Dylan and Perkins powerful and touching Power Of My Soul. Rare Bluegrass From Nashville: The 1960s
TBIRD0010CD
Released on 22/02/10. 1960’s Bluegrass from Nashville's Indie Labels The Spar recordings featured on this collection were recorded in 1966 (Spar LP 300 "The Bluegrass Sound Of Carl Story") and show Story and the Rambling Mountaineers returning to their straight bluegrass roots. Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs had crossed over to college and folk festival crowds and Carl followed right behind them, becoming a fixture on the bluegrass festival circuit during the sixties, seventies and eighties. Very little is known of Mark Peek and the New Kentucky Travelers except that they recorded just this one song for the Spar label.

"Dueling Banjos" was an enormous hit record for Eric Weissberg in 1972, having been featured in the film "Deliverance". This version was on the Spar/Plantation House LP "Dueling Banjos, Rocky Mountain High and the City Of New Orleans" by The Now Generation and quite possibly features Bobby Thompson (of Barefoot Jerry fame) on banjo. The remainder of the recordings featured on this compilation are from W.C. "Red" Wortham's Sur- Speed label. Red's recordings were for the grass roots rural bluegrass fans. Fiddler Earl McCollum recorded only three 45s in his career, all were for Sur- Speed, "If God Had Wanted Us On The Moon" achieved cult status. We can be thankful that there are recordings documenting this wonderful chapter in American musical history.

Early Country Rock From Nashville
TBIRD0011CD
Released on 22/02/10. An interesting compilation of artists that recorded early country rock at Spar Records in Nashville in the 1960s. Nearly all of the Country sessions at Spar utilized the cream of the crop of young studio musicians working in Nashville during the 1960s. Some of the legendary names who participated were Mac Gayden, Wayne Moss, Kenny Buttrey, Norbert Putnam, Lloyd Green, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Pete Drake and Charlie McCoy.

These are the people that played on sessions with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan ("Blonde On Blonde"), Neil Young, The Byrds ("Sweetheart Of The Rodeo"), Linda Ronstadt and went on to found the Area Code 615 band and Barefoot Jerry.

The recording of "Almost To Nashville" (featuring Lloyd Green on steel guitar) gives a hint of greatness to come. Hal Kennedy recorded Country music for Spar but was better known as the lead singer with the Gospel group The Dixie Echoes. Jake & Josh were actually Jake Tullock and Josh Graves from Flatt & Scruggs' band, moonlighting as a duo.

Mac Gayden's electric sitar on "Great Big Woman" and the subject matter of "Nervous Breakdown" are both quite adventurous for the day. This compilation focuses on the original Country Rock recordings released by the Spar label which still sounds fresh after all these years. It's high time that Spar's rockin' Country sides took their rightful place in the history of Nashville music, and this collection should help to shine a little light on some obscure, but nevertheless classic, old records.

The Rip Chords
Hey Little Cobra And Other Hot Rod Hits / Three Window Coupe
TBIRD0012CD
The Rip Chords? For many, it brings to mind producer Terry Melcher (Doris Days on) and Bruce Johnston, who would go on to join the Beach Boys. But the real story is a lot more fascinating than merely talking about a collaboration between these two high profile talents.

The band was started Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart in 1957, landing a deal with the Columbia label in 1962. Melcher, then just 20 years old, was assigned to produce the duos first single in 63, titled Here I Stand, which reached number 51 on the national charts and was quickly followed by a second single, Gone. It was at this time, Johnston was brought in, Melcher had written a song called Hey Little Cobra with Carol Conners and Melcher decided to record this under the name of The Rip Chords, with only himself and Johnston on vocals. His lead vocal was outstanding with Johnson doing the falsetto and the single reached number four on the American charts in 1964, with an album quickly following titled Hey Little Cobra And Other Hot Rod Hits. This featured the voices of Melcher, Johnston and Stewart, although only the last named (together with Rotkin and Marcus) went out and did shows and TV appearances to promote the single and album. In the Summer of 64, the band had another hit with Three Window Coupe, written by Jan Berry (of Jan And Dean fame) and Roger Christian. Again, an album of the same title quickly followed, with Melcher and Johnston handling a lot of the vocals. The band had one more hit with One Piece Topless Bathing Suit, performed the song Red Hot Roadster in the movie A Swingin’ Summer (which also featured Raquel Welch and the Righteous Brothers) and well that was about it.

What they’ve left behind is a real cameo of a great time for music and their role in the development of what became known as The California Sound should not be underestimated, as is proven in the enduring worth of these albums.

ECLEC2185
Released 22/02/10. Esoteric are pleased to continue their series of CD reissues of the catalogue of Finnish Progressive group Wigwam with their classic 1975 double live album Live Music From The Twilight Zone.

Formed in Helsinki in 1969, the band featured the talents of British Keyboard player and vocalist Jim Pembroke, Jukka Gustavson (keyboards, vocals), Pekka Pohjola (bass, violin, keyboards) and Ronnie Osterberg (drums).

In late 1974, following the release of the album Being (also released by Esoteric this month), the band were augmented by the arrival of guitarist Pekka Rechardt. Soon after a series of concerts in Finland were recorded by Love Records to comprise Wigwam’s first live album. The recordings demonstrated the diversity of the band and the excellent musicianship of its members. A particular stand out track was a fifteen minute version of Jim Pembroke’s Grass for Blades, previously recorded under the pseudonym HOT Thumbs O’Rielly. Soon after these recordings both Gustavson and Pohjola departed, leaving this album as their final statement with Wigwam.

The Gospel Sound
SHOUT62
Brothers and Sisters we take as our text today Tony Heilbut s book The Gospel Sound , first published in 1972, acknowledged as the historical bible of the music genre that is the prime source and influence of soul music in particular, and many elements of pop/rock music, from singing preachers in storefront churches to the house-rocking quartets who took their audiences to religious frenzy.

Two double-albums were compiled for Columbia by Mr Heilbut to illustrate his book, produced with the assistance of the great John Hammond. Shout! presents a newly compiled best of those releases, which brings this great music back to the congregation for the first time in almost two decades.

This selection features the classic quartet stylings of the Pilgrim Travellers, the Dixie Hummingbirds , with the inspirational Ira Tucker, the harmonic jubilee delivery of the Golden Gate Quartet, the dynamic vocals of great gospel divas Mahalia Jackson, Bessie Griffin and Dorothy Love Coates, the gritty vocals and driving guitar of spiritual troubador Blind Willie Johnson, and the seminal vocal group styling of Mitchell's Christian Singers.

Shout! has the blessing of Tony Helibut and quotes from his pivotal text with which this release is very much connected. With both the original vinyl and long out of print first edition CD currently fetching premium prices Shout! Records is pleased to make this valuable historic music package available to all.
