George Best - boutique and nightclub owner, fashion
model, international playboy with a reputation for drinking, gambling
and womanising - was the first footballing superstar.
During his all too brief career at the top, George's
genius led to him endorsing hundreds of products that bore his name,
his image or his signature... "Tynetex Coats are trendy in an informal
sort of way", "Fore brings out the Best in a man", "Cookstown
are the Best family sausage", "Put yourself in my (Stylo Matchmaker)
shoes", and the never-to-be-forgotten "E for B and George Best"
campaign for the Egg Marketing Board.
HIS HOUSE: The ultimate collectable, Built specifically
for George (with a sunken bath and snooker table), on the outskirts
of Manchester, it now doubles as an animal sanctuary! If I had kept
it, it would be worth about six million now. It was on the market three
years ago for £366696. Current value is around £456,660.

Thirty years on and anything 'Georgie' is highly prized
and collectable; from his Cup and League Championship medals, his European
and UK Footballer Of The Year trophies, to the coathangers that bore
his face (backed with a coaching manual), although you may find some
difficulty finding a buyer for a packet of 36-year-old sausages. Here
are some Best possessions that would be highly interesting to a collector
of all things George... |
HIS PORTRAIT Commissioned for the cover of Georgie
The Best Album in 1996 from football artist and icon painter Matthew
Ensor, it was originally valued at £1,066. Would now fetch about three
times that amount at auction.

HIS CAR: George's first Jag. Purchased from a
Man United fan who ensured that it had all the sevens in it VIC 777D
- 'cos that was his number. Current value in pristine condition £20,666.
HIS SHIRT: Could be any one of half a dozen
North American League clubs or take your pick from Stockport County,
Bournemouth, Fulham or Dunstable Town. But a Northern Ireland or original
Man U Shirt has to be tops and would fetch £566-£869. The one he wore
at Wembley for the 1968 European Cup Final against Benfica could fetch
upwards of £2,666 at auction.
HIS BALL: The one that hit the back of the net
six times in the Fifth Round FA Cup match against Northampton Town in
February 1976. Signed by George, it could fetch more than £4,660.
HIS BOOTS: A pair of original Sixties George
Best Stylo Matchmakers in top condition would set you back a fiver -
but a signed pair, authenticated to have been worn by George, or his
unique calf-skinned Golden Boots, would jump the price up well into
the hundreds. |
HIS BAGS: A 'signed'
kit- bag carrying a portrait of George cost £1.50 in the '70s and would
fetch a tenner today.
HIS BOOKS: Georgie Best's Soccer Annuals - a
must for all Manchester United fans in the late 60s and the early 70s.
Once, you could pick them up for a few pence at jumble sales, but are
increasingly hard to find. £4-£5.
HIS
BOOZE: A signed bottle of the Man United 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon
Premier League Championship wine (I snaffled one from his 50th Birthday
Bash but drank it on the bus home). £20.
HIS SIGNATURE: The Red Album CD booklet contains
the signatures of Denis Law, Paddy Crerand, Nobby Stiles and Georgie
Should fetch over £100 at auction.
HIS RECORD: A limited edition of 500 picture
discs were issued for the launch of Georgie The Best Album and sold
out immediately They now sell for double the original £10 price, although
a few are still available by mail order at the original price from Exotica
Records at 49 Belvoir Road, London, 81322 OQY.
