| In the fifties, before he became a major international singing star Sacha Distel was regarded to be the best guitarist in Europe. 'Sacha's Guitar' is a collection of the best, most important recordings Sacha made during this period including performances with an admiring John Lewis and the modern jazz quartet, Lionel Hampton, the Belgian saxophonist and flautist Bobby Jaspar and solo recordings written by Billy Byers and confirm that the young Sacha was indeed a sublime talent fit to step into the shoes of Django Reinhardt who had passed away in 1953. Sacha decided to concentrate on vocals soon after his much-publicised affair with Brigitte Bardot in 1958. He actually refused her offer of marriage as he felt his career would always be overshadowed by hers. If the handsome Sacha was along with gainsbourg, chevalier and montand an institution in France (where his tv show ran for a decade) he was enormous in Britain also (considered here to be the quintessential French lover) and in 1971 enjoyed a number 1 hit with his version of 'Raindrops keep falling on my head' Superb light jazz-pop instumentals that sound modern today and have real international appeal. In a nutshell extremely 'cool' music as charming and sen suous as you would expect from Sacha Distel. |
