The Four Freshmen
Blue World (1950-55) acmem82cd
A pre-echo of the sixties, The Four Freshmen pioneered a revolutionary new style of close-harmony vocals that set the stage for bands like the Beach Boys, The Mamas & Papas, Spanky & Our Gang, the Hi-Los, The Lettermen, the Manhattan Transfer and countless others. Taking their inspiration from barbershop quartets, Glenn Milleršs Modernaires and Mel Tormešs Mel-Tones. The greatest vocal group of all time the four freshmen prepared the ground for such artists as the beach boys and mamas and papas and association to create a sound that is synonymous with classsic sixties pop. Brian Wilson has always insisted that hearing the four freshmen changed his life. indeed The beach boys style can be heard eveywhere on this collection of hit singles, significant album tracks and high quality rarities from the early fifties. Most of these great recordings are still out of print and will export well to America and Japan where there are many four freshmen societies and fan clubs. By today, no fewer than 22 lineups of the Four Freshmen have continued the legendary vocal tradition of the original band. In 2000 the group won Downbeat Magazine's reader's poll award for Vocal Group of the Year, proving the quartet's timeless appeal and securing their role as one of the most innovative, imitated and influential vocal groups in history.
