Lees' Barclay James Harvest - Legacy - Live At The Shepherds Bush Empire
2006 (eclec2010) |
November
2006 saw a highly successful UK tour by John Lees' Barclay James Harvest. Featuring
founder BJH members John Lees & Woolly Wolstenholme, the tour featured some
of the finest music from the BJH canon. Perennial classics such as "Mockingbird", "Poor
Man's Moody Blues", "Child of the Universe" & "Hymn" were
joined by definitive versions of "The Great 1974 Mining Disaster", "The
Poet" / "After the Day" and "Poor Wages", none of which
had been performed live for over 30 years.
A film crew & mobile recording unit for a DVD & CD release captured
the London concert on November 5th. Cited by John Lees as "The best live
album I've ever made", "Legacy" is a superb audio document of
a legendary band.

Dead Or Alive -
Sophisticated Boom Boom (crpop4) |
Sophisticated
Boom Boom was the debut album from UK synth pop/new wave act Dead Or Alive, released
in 1984. Fronted by the imposing figure of Pete Burns, latterly a fixture on
UK television - not least through his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother - it
gave the band its first UK Top 40 single, with a re-make of KC & The Sunshine
Band's 'That's The Way I Like It'.
That single, as well as 'Misty Circles', were also hits on the US Hot Dance
and Club Play charts - when the latter was reissued as the b-side to 'You Spin
Me Round (Like A Record)'. 'Misty Circles' and further single 'What I Want' were
co-written by later Sisters Of Mercy and Mission guitarist Wayne Hussey, but
it was Burns' confrontational press image that generated column inches. Dead
Or Alive were embraced by the New Romantics as well as clubbers, and Burns engaged
in a series of entertaining press spats with Boy George about who minted that
image of extravagant gay front-man/outrageous dresser first. This re-release,
on CD for the first time in the UK.

The Cake -
More Of Cake (crrev222) |
What
links New Orleans Maestro Harold Battiste, Dr. John, The Soft Machine, The Daily
Flash, Tiny Tim, Jack Nitsche, Sonny and Cher, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Ginger
Baker's Airforce?
The Cake, the last of the classic girl groups, whose two 1967/68 albums are
as they say a game of two (sometimes three!) halves, classic girl groupisms mixed
with Baroque Pop, Wyrd Folk, Psychpop and club R&B, all with a wonderful
good humour.
Fans of the esoteric might care to know that Kevin Ayers' song "Eleanor's
Cake Which Ate Her" is about the group, that they sang backing vocals on
Electric Ladyland and the first Soft Machine album. Also Eleanor herself sang ‘I
Got You Babe’ with Tiny Tim (backed by The Band) in the cult movie "You
Are What You Eat".
A wonderful snapshot of the Sunset Strip, with a wonderfully decadent atmosphere
for three such innocent girls...you'll just love it! The Cake recently reformed
to play the prestigious launch party for the forthcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic,
and who knows – they may come to your town soon...
Never previously on CD cult artists, wonderfully re-mastered by Mr. Nick Robbins
and with gorgeous packaging featuring wonderful pictures provided by The Cake
and legendary rock photographer Ed Caraeff.

band formed by former founder members of Hawkwind, the group Space Ritual are
true exponents of Space Rock, performing sell-out concerts drawing on "Classic" Hawkwind

The Photos -
The Photos (cdmred338) |
An
expanded re-release of this much-loved Top Five UK chart album first released
in June 1980. Often touted as 'the UK's answer to Blondie', there was much more
to the Photos than that, with fiery, Buzzcocks-like guitars coiling round Wendy
Wu's vocals.
Formed in Evesham from the ashes of cult punk act Satan's Rats, the Photos
also released a clutch of great 'garage-girl' singles, including 'Irene', 'Friends'
and 'Now You Tell Me That We're Through', all included here. As a bonus, both
sides of the band's debut single, 'I'm So Attractive' c/w 'Guitar Hero', and
later bside 'Je T'Aime', which have never before released on CD, are included!
The album also includes the entire "Blackmail Tapes" album of demos
and out-takes. The artwork has been expanded to include new liner notes written
in collaboration with guitarist Steve Eagles, with accompanying interviews with
others around the band. The band were originally due to sign with Cherry Red,
before accepting an offer from CBS. Nearly three decades later, Cherry Red is
delighted at last to be able to offer a home to one of the great pop albums of
the early 80s.

Rare Bird -
As Your Mind Flies By (eclec2002) |
Rare
Bird are perhaps best remembered for having the distinction of being the first
act to be released on Tony Stratton Smith’s gloriously eclectic label Charisma
records (also the home of GENESIS, THE NICE and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR to name
but a few) and for their excellent 1970 hit single “Sympathy”. Like
fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed
around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock which eschewed the
use of guitars. Following the success of their debut album and single (“Sympathy”),
the band recorded this classic album in the Summer of 1970. “As Your Mind
Flies By” featured the epic “Flight”, a legendary piece which
dominated the albums second side. An excellent work, the album met with much
success, with Billboard magazine in America declaring Rare Bird to be in the
top ten best new acts of the year.
