BOOKS
Lance Armstrong 'It's Not About The Bike - My Journey Back To
Life' Read his other book 'Every Second Counts' last year and was
very inspired. He overcame cancer (with a less than 10% survival
chance) to go on to win the Tour De France cycle race a record
breaking 7 times. It is another captivating read, I really highly
recommend it.
Steve Strange - 'Blitzed' Steve has actually written a very readable
biography. He charts his highs and lows with a seemingly pretty
honest take on his life.
Jay Bakker - 'Son Of A Preacher Man' Jay is the son of Jim and
Tammy Faye Bakker. Jim Bakker was of course the Christian preacher
who lost everything and was sent to jail for fraud. Jay has had
a difficult but interesting life. By the end of the book everything
seems to be working our for him
CDs
Kevin Tihista - Home Demons Volume 1 Have been a fan of Kevin's
work for quite some time. Always feel the same with him, the
talent is there but he needs to sit down and really distil things.
He
could make one really brilliant album, but it needs a real focus.......
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A
Retrospective Have liked them for quite some time but it was the
Dig! documentary that really turned me on to buying this album.
Some great stuff here....
FILMS
'Broken Flowers' Bill Murray's follow up to 'Lost In Translation.'
Not as good, but it still has something special....
'The Constant Gardener' I read the book a couple of years ago.
Multi-national pharmaceutical companies up to no good. Some beautiful
scenery; helps to heave read the book to know what is going on...
'Mrs Henderson Presents' The story of the Windmill Theatre on
London. I don't know how accurate the story actually is but the
film is entertaining, someone you want it all to be true.
'Primer' Not exactly sure what was going on here. Low budget but
highly praised film about time travel. It is a tad confusing at
times to put it mildly. Of the other 8 people in the cinema when
I watched it, 3 walked out half way through. I asked the others
what they thought at the end and one hesitated and then commented,
'I don't know what was going on; I think we're just about to go
into the cinema. But it was really good though.' That's a fair
enough comment.....
'March Of The Penguins' It's interesting that out of all the nature
films made recently, this is the one that had taken off. A big
success in the US and now out and doing pretty well here in the
UK. It is a quite captivating film and the story is told very well.
What isn't covered at all but I am sure will be in the extras on
the DVD is how the crew lived when they made the film in such extreme
weather conditions. That must also be an extraordinary story.
'Match Point' Oh dear. Woody Allen written and directed film with
Scarlett Johansson. This a bit of a downer all round, the story
is not that strong and it gets more and more unrealistic towards
the end. A disappointment...
GIGS
Suzie Higgie - 12 Bar Club London Suzie recorded an album for
Cherry Red which we released around 4 years ago. Finally I get
to see her play live. The 12 bar club is a little like watching
a gig in a largish sitting room. Small but cosy. It was just Suzie
and her guitar which went down very well with the appreciate audience.
Joe Brown/ Marty Wilde - Hexagon Reading Yes, these two guys are
still gigging. Not just gigging but packing them in. Over 1,000
turned up for this date in Reading. Quite remarkable really. I
was just about the youngest person there which makes a change,
the next gig below I was probably the oldest one there....
The Doves - Reading Very Loud. But pretty good.
Jimmy Webb - reading A master songwriter. Really good evening |
