BOOKS
Paul McGrath - Back From The Brink. Great autobiography from the former Aston Villa and Ireland footballer.

Clifford Irving - The Hoax. Loved the film so read the book. Even better. He really did almost pull off the biggest literary scam of all time.

The Islamist - Ed Husain. Autobiography of a young Asian man who gets very involved (and then uninvolved) in the Muslim fundamentalist movement. Interesting.

Like, Misunderstood - Rick Brown and Mike Stax. Autobiography of Rick Brown singer with the Misunderstood. There is actually a really good story here but the writing style put me off a bit. Rick has had a fascinating life and it is worth putting up with the strange style to find the good story.

Graham Poll - seeing Red Football. referee Poll tells his story. Doesn't like Chelsea much...

Dan Millman - The Journeys of Socrates: How a Boy Became a Warrior Became a Wise Man. I liked Dan Millman's 'The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior'  a lot when I read it many years ago. This is the story of his grandfather Socrates who also features as Dan's teacher in the Peaceful Warrior. It is a good story. I don't know how true it all is though.

FILMS
Letters from Iuno Jima and Flags Of Our fathers Really enjoyed both these Clint Eastwood films made from completely different perspectives (Japanese and American). Set in the second world war they chronicle true stories over a rather one sided battle for control of a key island in Indonesia.

Atlantic records: The House that Armet built The story of Armet Ertegan and Atlantic Records. Fascinating.

Offside Iranian film about a group of girls trying to attend a football match (women are banned from watching football in Iran). Not that much happens but it is quite a sweet film that somehow holds your attention.

Rollercoaster Low budget documentary about Stuart Wood (Woody) from the Bay City Rollers. I used to work at Bell Records when the Rollers were a pretty big band. Could have done with a lot more interviews from different people but it just about works.

Scott Walker: 20th Century Man Really good. Well worth seeking out. Loved the way he explains the sounds he is trying to get on 'Tilt' and 'The Drift.'

A Mighty Heart True story about the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan. Really well done.

Counterfeiters The story of how the Nazis used a team of crack Jewish forgers in the second world war to produce enough UK and US currencies in an attempt to bring down both economies. Really interesting.

Goodbye Bafana The story of Nelson Mandela's prison warden and his relationship with him. Well done.

The Beckoning Silence Mountain climber Joe Simpson (Touching the Void) recounts the story of how a group of climbers died on the North Face of the Eiger. These guys are brave, big time....

Infamous  The story of Truman Capote and the writing of his groundbreaking book, 'In Cold Blood' about the murder of a family. There was also a film called In Cold Blood which I actually liked better because I felt I actually got to know Capote and the two convicted murderers better than this film.

CDs
"Comicopera" Robert Wyatt Have always loved his voice. This album doesn't disappoint.

'The White Room' The KLF I dig this out now and again. Great album

'Made Of Bricks' Kate Nash  Maybe I shouldn't but I actually really like this album....

'An End Has A Start' The Editors  I enjoyed this.

GIGS:
Patti Smith - Oxford I used to work at Arista records years ago and I was there when her first album 'Horses,' came out. I hadn't seen her play for years. She was great!

Ian Hunter - Oxford He may be getting older but he still rocks. Great two hour plus set.

Bridget St John - London Really fantastic. Had never seen her play before. A memorable evening.

Annie Lennox - Albert Hall Great.

Barry Mason - London An  intimate gig from the legendary songwriter. Told all the stories behind the songs. Great stuff!

FOOTBALL
26th December 2007 Staines Town v AFC Wimbledon 2-5   The Dons swept to a convincing win in this battle between two of the clubs tipped for promotion. They now need to keep going on top form to ensure a play off place at the very least.
