Darling Buds

Darling Buds : Pop Said
Pop Said
cdmred305

Firmly entrenched in the strange Indie phenomena that was the 'Blonde' movement, with their Beatles influenced vocals and hook-laden melodies, The Darling Buds were the most promising band to come out of Wales in the late 80s/early 90s.

Formed in Newport, Wales, in 1986 by singer Andrea Lewis and guitarist Harley Farr, they took there name from comic novel, Darling Buds of May by author H.E Bates and released their first single double a side 'If I Said' and 'Just To Be Seen' in Feb of 87.

The band began to get a considerable amount of attention, but it wasn't until Harley cheekily hand delivered their single straight into 'to be reviewed next boxes' of NME and Melody Maker, thanks to the help of the cleaner, that things started to heat up. He also handed two into the Broadcasting house, one for the attention of John Peel, the other for the attention of Janice Long. John immediately started playing 'Just To Be Seen' where as Janice 'If I Said' - The band were getting two songs played on Radio One!

Labels soon picked up the scent and the band put pen to paper with Native.

After much arduous touring the band eventually signed to Epic in 1988, and thanks to the tours the band gained a loyal group of fans, who charmingly named themselves the Skull F**k Crew! The Crew would go on to become future guitar techs and merch sellers, and still have a web-site today dedicated to their favourite bands. The band's first single with their new label came in the shape of 'Pop Said' and it quickly hit the British Top 30, earning them an appearance on Top of The Pops.

It would appear as though The Darling Buds were in for stardom though alas it was not to be. Although the subsequent two albums were more sophisticated they had lost the raw charm of 'Pop Said' and as is so common with many great bands, the frustration of elusive commercial success saw them slowly disband.

So here it is, reissued and packed with nine bonus tracks, including the four incredible hit singles 'Lets Go Round There', 'Burst', 'Hit The Ground' and 'You've Got To Choose'. The accompanying booklet includes thoughts from the band today looking back at the release, alongside rare and exclusive pictures from their personal archive.
